DGFT DSC explained: the certificate every importer-exporter needs

If you hold an Import Export Code (IEC), sooner or later the DGFT portal will ask you to sign something — a license application, an amendment, a RoDTEP claim. And your regular Class 3 DSC will be rejected.

Why DGFT is different

DGFT certificates embed your IEC number alongside the organization identity. The portal validates that link before accepting a signature, which is why a standard Class 3 certificate — even an organization one — fails there.

What you can do with it

Documents to keep ready

1. IEC certificate — the certificate is issued against it
2. Organization PAN and registration proof (GST certificate or incorporation)
3. Authorization letter naming the signatory (we provide the template)
4. Signatory's PAN + Aadhaar for eKYC

Timing note for renewals

DGFT re-registration after renewal is same-day, but if your certificate expires mid-application, the portal can hold your file in limbo. Renew at least two weeks before expiry — our reminder service pings you 30 days out.
